Kenyan international midfielder Victor Wanyama has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing to a close a distinguished career that spanned multiple countries and top-tier clubs.
In a brief but emotional statement, Wanyama reflected on his journey from humble beginnings to representing the nation on the global stage.
“Today I announce my retirement from football. Four different countries, six different clubs—a boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a nation’s pride every time I stepped onto the pitch,” he said.
The former Harambee Stars captain paid tribute to those who supported him throughout his career, including his family, friends, agent, fans and coaching staff.
Wanyama rose from the streets of Muthurwa to become one of Kenya’s most successful football exports, earning international recognition during stints in Europe and North America.
He played in top leagues including the English Premier League, where he featured for clubs such as Southampton FC and Tottenham Hotspur, becoming the first Kenyan to score in the UEFA Champions League.
Wanyama also enjoyed a successful spell at Celtic FC in Scotland, where he won league titles and built a reputation as a commanding defensive midfielder.
At the international level, he captained Harambee Stars and was widely regarded as a key figure in Kenyan football for over a decade.
His retirement marks the end of an era for Kenyan football, with fans and stakeholders expected to celebrate a career defined by resilience, leadership and trailblazing achievements on the global stage.
