Veteran gynaecologist and Nairobi Hospital director Dr Job Obwaka has died at the age of 83, his family has confirmed.

Dr Obwaka passed away at a hospital in Nairobi, bringing to an end a long medical career that spanned decades and earned him recognition as one of Kenya’s experienced specialists in women’s health.

The family confirmed his death but did not disclose further details surrounding the cause.

His death comes just weeks after his dramatic arrest, an incident that drew national attention and placed a spotlight on internal disputes at Nairobi Hospital.

The arrest was linked to an ongoing governance and leadership wrangle at the hospital, which has in recent months attracted political interest and public scrutiny.

The dispute revolved around control of the hospital’s board and management, with factions emerging within the institution.

The saga intensified after claims and counterclaims surfaced over alleged attempts to influence the hospital’s leadership, with some parties linking the controversy to individuals associated with President William Ruto.

Dr Obwaka, as a board member and senior figure within the hospital, was among those caught up in the standoff, which culminated in his arrest alongside others.

The circumstances surrounding the arrest sparked debate within the medical fraternity and raised concerns about governance in private health institutions.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
