UDA SG Hassan Omar Apologises Over Remarks, Says Comments Were Misinterpreted

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar Hassan has issued an apology following criticism over recent remarks that he says were misinterpreted and taken out of context, insisting his comments were never intended to offend or target any community.

In a clarification statement dated May 24, 2026, the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament said his remarks had sparked concern, particularly among people from the Central Kenya region, prompting him to publicly explain his position and express regret.

“My comments were never intended to demean, offend, or target any community,” Hassan said in the statement.

The UDA Secretary General defended his public record, saying he has consistently championed national unity, human dignity and the rights of all Kenyans throughout his political career.

“Throughout my public life, I have remained firmly committed to upholding the dignity, rights, and unity of all Kenyans,” he stated.

Hassan explained that the remarks under scrutiny were made within the context of discussions around historical land injustices affecting the Coastal region, an issue he described as part of his long-standing advocacy.

“The remarks in question were made within the context of my long-standing advocacy on historical land injustices affecting the Coastal region, and were never intended to promote division, hostility, or animosity among communities,” he said.

The apology comes amid growing public debate around political messaging and ethnic sensitivity, with leaders increasingly facing scrutiny over statements perceived as divisive.

While maintaining that his remarks had been misunderstood, Hassan acknowledged that some Kenyans may have been hurt by his comments

“Nevertheless, I fully appreciate that some of our brothers and sisters, particularly from the Central Kenya region, may have felt aggrieved by the remarks,” he said.

“To all those who may have been offended, I sincerely regret the misunderstanding and extend my apology.”

The statement signals an effort by the ruling party official to ease tensions following the controversy, while reaffirming his commitment to national cohesion and unity.
