A 29-year-old Taiwanese national has been arrested at the Isebania One Stop Border Post (OSBP) in Migori County after detectives intercepted heroin allegedly being smuggled into Kenya from Tanzania.
In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect, identified as Wang Hsiang-hui, was arrested during a routine security screening conducted by officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) with the assistance of a police sniffer dog.
According to the DCI, the suspect had crossed into Kenya from neighbouring Tanzania when the K9 detection dog signalled the presence of suspicious substances in one of his bags.
Detectives immediately searched the luggage and recovered 26 capsules containing a brown powdery substance concealed inside.
The seized substance weighed approximately 18.26 grams and preliminary field tests identified it as heroin, the DCI said.
The suspect was arrested at the scene and taken into police custody, where he is being processed ahead of his arraignment in court.
The recovered narcotics have been secured as exhibits as investigations continue.
The DCI said the arrest underscores the role of K9 units and anti-narcotics officers in combating drug trafficking across Kenya’s borders.
The agency reiterated its commitment to working with partner security agencies to curb transnational crime and prevent the entry of illegal narcotics into the country.
The DCI also urged members of the public to report suspected drug trafficking and other criminal activities through its anonymous reporting channels.
