A 56-year-old man suspected of child trafficking has been formally charged in court following his arrest in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia County.
The suspect, identified as Gilbert Nyabuto Musome, was arraigned after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launched investigations into his activities.
He faces charges of trafficking in persons contrary to the Counter-Trafficking in Persons Act, 2011, as well as false representation under the National Intelligence Service Act.
According to investigators, Nyabuto’s arrest followed a tip-off from members of the public who became suspicious after spotting him with a young boy at Nyamira Village in Kiminini.
Detectives responding to the alert found the suspect in the company of a 10-year-old child. He allegedly claimed to be a “Deputy Commissioner” with the National Intelligence Service and presented an identification document bearing that rank.
However, a search of his belongings raised further suspicion. Officers recovered assorted academic documents belonging to different individuals, as well as blank fake Kenya Defence Forces calling letters.

When questioned, the suspect claimed he was assisting the child to secure accommodation.
The minor was later positively identified by his mother from the Salona area and has since been safely reunited with her.
The court released the suspect on a cash bail of KSh 40,000 or a bond of KSh 80,000 with one surety of a similar amount. The case is scheduled for hearing on May 15, 2026.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains committed to combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable persons,” the agency said in a statement.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, noting that public tip-offs played a crucial role in the arrest and rescue.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspect’s activities, including possible offences of impersonation and fraud.
