More than 500 students at Pwani University have received training aimed at equipping them with both digital content creation skills and financial literacy tools during the “Hook’d on Fresh” masterclass hosted by Safaricom in partnership with Sprite.
The interactive session focused on empowering young people to turn their online creativity into sustainable income streams by leveraging social media platforms, developing personal brands, and understanding the dynamics of the creator economy.
Students were taken through practical demonstrations led by industry experts, who emphasized the importance of consistency, audience engagement, and strategic content production in building successful digital careers.
Speaking during the event, participants said the training had reshaped their understanding of social media use, with many now viewing it as a source of livelihood rather than just entertainment.
“I have learned that my smartphone can be a business tool,” said Alfred Fondo, a Computer Science student at Pwani University. “Before today, I only used TikTok for fun, but now I understand how I can earn from my content and become financially independent.”
He added that improved connectivity support offered through Safaricom’s S-Hook bundles would help students remain active in the digital space and grow their online presence.
Beyond content creation, the masterclass also introduced students to financial management concepts, including saving and investing income earned from digital platforms to ensure long-term financial stability.
Industry players such as Tileh Pacbro, Rono, Juma Shibe, and Vallery shared their experiences on turning digital influence into profitable careers, offering practical tips on branding and monetization.
Safaricom’s Wealth Management representative Phelister Wanjiru also introduced the Ziidi Money Market Fund, encouraging students to adopt disciplined saving habits as they explore digital income opportunities.
Organizers said the initiative aims to bridge the gap between creativity and financial empowerment, ensuring young people are not only skilled in content creation but also equipped to manage and grow their earnings.
The “Hook’d on Fresh” programme continues its rollout across universities in Kenya, with previous sessions held at Africa Nazarene University, University of Eldoret, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
