Registrar of Political Parties Confirms Sifuna’s Removal as ODM Secretary General

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has confirmed the removal of Edwin Sifuna as the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), following a resolution by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

In a letter dated July 9, 2026, addressed to ODM officials, Registrar of Political Parties J.C. Lonyangapuo said the office had reviewed documents submitted by the party and established that the removal process complied with the Political Parties Act and the ODM party constitution.

“Upon review of the documents submitted by the party and the lack of response from Hon. Edwin Watenya Sifuna, we note that the removal of the party Secretary General was in line with the Political Parties Act Cap. 70 and the ODM party constitution,” the letter stated.

The Registrar said the changes had been effected and party records updated to reflect the leadership changes.

The communication was addressed to ODM Deputy Party Leader, National Chairperson and Executive Director, following earlier correspondence on the matter, including a letter dated July 8, 2026, regarding the powers of the NEC to establish and determine the terms of reference for party committees.

Sifuna, who has served as ODM Secretary General, had faced internal party pressure amid leadership changes within the opposition party.

The latest development formally recognises the NEC decision at the party registration level, paving the way for ODM to update its leadership structures.

The move is expected to trigger further political debate within ODM, as the party prepares for the 2027 General Election and navigates internal realignments.
