Police in Kisumu have recovered a modified G3 rifle believed to have been used in a string of violent robberies, following an intelligence-led operation prompted by a tip-off from a member of the public.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the operation was launched by officers from Kondele Police Station after receiving “credible information from a wary and responsible citizen” pointing to the possible location of a missing G3 FMP rifle linked to criminal activity in the region.
The targeted operation led detectives to Kawese Village in Kolwa East, where they raided the home of a suspect identified as Wilson Ojowi.
Investigators said a family member of the suspect cooperated with police and directed officers to a suspicious site within the compound.
“What followed was a painstaking search that culminated in the shocking discovery: buried inside an unfinished latrine, officers unearthed the sought-after G3 rifle,” the DCI said in a statement.
The firearm, which had been concealed in a sack alongside an empty magazine, was found buried under freshly dug soil.
Detectives noted that the weapon had been crudely modified, with its butt stock and muzzle cut off—raising concerns it may have been adapted for close-range attacks.
The recovered rifle has since been processed and booked as an exhibit at Kondele Police Station, with forensic analysis expected to link it to multiple crime scenes.
Preliminary investigations have already tied the weapon to a recent robbery with violence incident in which a suspect was seen carrying a G3 rifle missing a butt stock—matching the recovered firearm.
Police have identified the prime suspect as 20-year-old Fortune Benedict Migot, who remains at large alongside three accomplices.
Authorities believe he is behind a series of violent robberies in and beyond Kisumu County.
The suspect is also reportedly facing an active case at Winam Law Courts and had previously sustained gunshot injuries during a robbery incident, further linking him to high-risk criminal activity.
Authorities say the manhunt has been intensified and are appealing to the public for information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
The DCI emphasized that the operation highlights the importance of cooperation between the public and law enforcement, stating that community support remains critical in combating crime and enhancing public safety.
