The National Police Service (NPS) has condemned incidents of violence reported in Kisumu City and Nyahururu Town, warning that individuals involved in political unrest and disruption of lawful gatherings will face legal action.
In a statement issued on Sunday, July 12, 2026, the NPS said preliminary investigations showed that a violent confrontation between two opposing groups in Kisumu resulted in the death of one person, injuries to several others, the burning of nine motorcycles and damage to a police vehicle.
Police said eight suspects had been arrested and placed in custody pending arraignment, while efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals linked to the violence were ongoing.
“The Service strongly condemns these acts of political intolerance, violence and goonism. Such incidents undermine public order, threaten national cohesion and violate citizens’ constitutional rights to peacefully associate, assemble and participate in political activities,” the statement read.
In Nyahururu Town, police said a group of individuals attempted to disrupt a political rally by throwing stones, resulting in minor injuries to members of the public.
The police statement acknowledged an injury involving Joseph Gitau, who sustained a chest injury and was treated and discharged.
The NPS said contrary to some allegations, there was no shooting incident during the Nyahururu confrontation.
“Police responded promptly and arrested six suspects, who have been placed in custody pending arraignment,” the statement said.
The incidents come amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election, with political rallies attracting large gatherings across the country.
The police service warned that no individual, regardless of political affiliation, social status or public office, was above the law.
“Anyone found engaging in violence, sponsoring criminal gangs, inciting supporters or disrupting lawful gatherings will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law,” the NPS said.
The service urged members of the public with information that could assist investigations to report through police stations, the toll-free numbers 999 and 911, or via the DCI channels.
The NPS said it remains committed to conducting thorough and impartial investigations to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
