NPS Launches Probe Into Viral Video of Suspect’s Arrest in Nakuru

The National Police Service (NPS) has launched an internal investigation after a video circulating on social media appeared to show officers handling a suspect unprofessionally during an arrest in Nakuru.

In a statement issued on Friday, police condemned the conduct captured in the video, saying the actions depicted did not reflect the Service’s standards of professionalism and respect for human rights.

“The Service strongly condemns all forms of unprofessional conduct, excessive force, or breaches of established procedures. We remain committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, respect for human rights, and adherence to the Constitution of Kenya and other relevant laws,” the statement read.

According to the NPS, preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred on Thursday, June 25, 2026, in Nakuru City

The Service noted that the officers’ actions may not have complied with the National Police Service Standing Orders, which provide safeguards to protect the dignity and rights of suspects

“Such behaviour is unacceptable and contrary to the core values of the National Police Service,” the statement added.

Inspector General Douglas Kanja has directed the Internal Affairs Unit to conduct what the Service described as a thorough, professional and impartial investigation into the incident.

Police said appropriate action will be taken against any officers found culpable once the inquiry is completed.

“The Inspector General has directed the Internal Affairs Unit to conduct a thorough, professional, and impartial investigation into the incident with findings expected within seven days. Appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation,” the statement said.

The National Police Service appealed to members of the public to continue cooperating with investigators by providing any information that could assist in establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Service reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on police brutality, misconduct and any actions that undermine public trust, saying it remains committed to professional policing that protects all Kenyans, residents and visitors while fully respecting their constitutional rights.
