Detectives in Meru have arrested a National Police Reserve (NPR) officer and recovered an AK-47 rifle believed to have been used in a violent robbery at Kirindini Shopping Centre on December 19, 2025.
The arrest was the result of a coordinated operation involving officers from Igembe South, Igembe North, and Mutuati sub-counties.
Acting on intelligence, the team tracked the suspect across the villages of Kina Meru, Kiutine, and Kina-Duba before successfully apprehending him.
Upon questioning, the officer led detectives to a site where he had buried the AK-47 rifle.
The weapon was retrieved along with a magazine containing two rounds of 7.62 x 39 mm ammunition. Investigators also seized the government-issued G3 rifle assigned to the officer, together with its magazine.
Police say the suspect is part of a larger gang implicated in the Kirindini robbery, which left residents shaken during the festive season.
He is currently in custody and is expected to be arraigned in court once processing is complete.
Meanwhile, detectives are pursuing his accomplices, who remain at large.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has pledged to intensify nationwide operations to dismantle criminal networks and safeguard lives and property during the holiday period.
Authorities have urged members of the public to provide information anonymously through the toll-free hotline 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp at 0709 570 000, under the #FichuaKwaDCI initiative.
