Kenyatta National Hospital Moves to Address Nurses’ Concerns Amid Strike Fears

Kenyatta National Hospital has sought to reassure staff, patients and the public following reports of a possible industrial action by nurses, stating that key concerns raised are being addressed through ongoing consultations.

In a press statement issued on April 12, the hospital management said the issues highlighted by the Kenya National Union of Nurses primarily relate to delays in remittance of statutory and third-party deductions, as well as broader staff welfare matters.

The hospital confirmed that staff salaries have been processed and paid up to March 2026, noting that remittance delays are linked to cash flow cycles common in public sector institutions.

“Remittance processing is, in part, influenced by the broader national healthcare financing and reimbursement cycle,” said  Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Richard Lesiyampe in a statemen.

He added that the hospital is working closely with relevant government agencies to ensure efficiency and compliance with regulatory frameworks.

Management also addressed concerns over pension contributions, stating that operations continue within established pension systems to ensure both employer and employee obligations are met.

On staffing, the hospital noted progress in transitioning clinical staff from contract to permanent and pensionable terms, with a number of healthcare workers already regularised.

It added that discussions are ongoing with government stakeholders to resolve remaining issues affecting human resources.

The hospital emphasized its commitment to dialogue, saying it is engaging staff representatives and other stakeholders to resolve disputes through established mechanisms.

“As the country’s largest national referral and teaching hospital, KNH remains fully committed to the uninterrupted provision of specialised healthcare services to the public,” the statement read.

The hospital called for continued cooperation among all parties to ensure that patient care and staff welfare are safeguarded.
