Kenya Railways Corporation has defended ongoing demolitions around the Nyayo National Stadium area, including structures linked to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, saying the activity is part of preparatory works for new railway infrastructure ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the corporation said the government is undertaking major upgrades under the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service to guarantee safe and efficient transport during the continental tournament, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
According to Kenya Railways, the new plan includes constructing a railway station adjacent to Nyayo National Stadium and a spur line running from the Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo Stadium area, Kibera and into the Talanta Sports City Stadium.
The corporation said the rail link will ensure seamless movement of fans to and from match venues.
Responding to criticism and public uproar over demolitions carried out overnight in parts of South B, South C and adjacent areas, Kenya Railways stated that all affected individuals had been issued with notices requiring them to vacate the railway corridor.
“To this end, all encroachers were advised and issued with notices in good time to vacate the railway corridor to pave way for construction of the station and spur line,” the statement read.
“Kenya Railways is holding a major stake in the land that has been identified for the above expanded development.”
The corporation did not mention Governor Wamatangi by name, but the timing of the exercise comes barely a day after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua alleged that the demolition of premises associated with the governor was politically motivated and sanctioned by senior government officials — claims State House has not responded to.
Kenya Railways also warned that any illegal structures found on the designated corridor would be demolished without further notice.
“Any illegal structures/property built on the corridor will be demolished and/or removed without further notice and at the encroacher’s risk and cost,” the statement added.
Kenya is accelerating infrastructure projects ahead of the AFCON football tournament, with Nyayo National Stadium designated as a key training centre.
Additional improvements are expected at Talanta Sports City Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Kenya Railways said the new commuter link will play a critical role in crowd movement, easing pressure on roads and improving safety during the tournament.
The demolitions continue to draw mixed reactions, with affected business owners demanding compensation, while government agencies insist the works are necessary for long-term urban mobility and AFCON readiness.
