The Kenya Met Department has forecast continued rainfall in several parts of the country during the week of March 17–23, 2026, with the intensity of the rains expected to increase from Thursday.

In its weekly outlook, the department said rainfall is likely over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Coastal region.

The agency warned that isolated heavy rainfall events could occur in some areas within these regions, raising the possibility of localized flooding and disruptions, especially in low-lying areas.

“Rainfall is expected over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern Lowlands and the Coastal region, with increased intensity from Thursday,” the department said in the forecast.

In the western region, including counties around the Lake Victoria Basin, residents should expect sunny intervals at the beginning of the week, followed by morning rains and afternoon or night showers and thunderstorms later in the period.

Similar conditions are expected in counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including areas around Nairobi and the central region, where morning rains and afternoon or evening thunderstorms may occur in several places as the week progresses.

Meanwhile, parts of North-western Kenya, including areas around Lodwar, are expected to remain largely sunny and dry, though occasional morning rains and thunderstorms may develop in isolated locations.

The forecast also indicates that North-eastern Kenya, including counties such as Garissa County and Wajir County, will experience mostly dry conditions early in the week before scattered rainfall develops in some areas.

In the South-eastern lowlands, including parts of Machakos County, Kitui County and Makueni County, the department expects generally sunny conditions at the start of the forecast period, followed by morning showers and afternoon or night thunderstorms, particularly from Thursday.

Along the Coastal region, including Mombasa and surrounding counties, morning, afternoon and night showers are likely to occur in some areas during the week.

Temperature forecasts indicate that daytime temperatures above 30°C will be experienced in several parts of the country, particularly in the Coast, North-eastern and North-western regions.

However, night-time temperatures below 10°C are expected in some highland areas, including parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, sections of the North Rift, and areas near Mount Kilimanjaro.

Weather experts have advised residents to stay updated through official forecasts and remain alert to changing conditions, especially in regions likely to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
