The Kenya Met Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning of continued downpours across several parts of the country through March 3, 2026.
In the advisory released Wednesday afternoon, the department said areas currently experiencing more than 20mm of rainfall within 24 hours are expected to continue receiving moderate to heavy rains from February 25 to February 28, with some regions likely to experience extended rainfall into early March.
The weatherman projected that the intensity of the rains is expected to decrease from March 1 in the southeastern lowlands, the Coast region, and the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi.
However, heavy rainfall exceeding 20mm in 24 hours is expected to persist over the Lake Victoria Basin and the Highlands West of the Rift Valley until March 3.
Counties listed as areas of concern include Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Nairobi, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Taita Taveta, Kitui, Kwale, Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi and parts of Isiolo, Marsabit and Garissa.
The department cautioned residents in the affected areas to remain alert for potential floods, flash floods and poor visibility. It warned that flood waters may appear in areas where it has not rained heavily, particularly downstream.
“People are advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes,” the advisory stated.
The notice has been addressed to senior government officials, including the Presidency, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, the National Disaster Operations Centre, county governors and relevant emergency agencies to enhance preparedness and response.
The meteorological department said it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if there are any changes.
