The Kenya Met has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning that several parts of the country are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall over the next week.
In the advisory dated May 7, the department said the rains are expected to affect areas in the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Central Highlands, and parts of southeastern and northwestern Kenya.
According to the weather agency, some areas could receive more than 200mm of rainfall between May 8 and May 14, with the intensity expected to peak between May 10 and May 13 before gradually reducing.
“The rainfall being experienced over several parts of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, and Central Highlands including parts of the Southeastern Lowlands is expected to intensify,” the advisory stated.
Counties expected to be affected include Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Busia, Kakamega, Bungoma, Siaya, Nairobi, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nyandarua and Nakuru, among others.
The advisory also covers counties in the Rift Valley and western regions, including Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Elgeyo-Marakwet and West Pokot.
The department warned that the heavy rainfall may trigger flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in vulnerable regions, particularly in hilly and escarpment zones.
Residents have been advised to avoid walking or driving through moving water, refrain from sheltering under trees or near grilled windows during storms, and exercise caution in landslide-prone areas such as the Aberdare Ranges, Mt Kenya region and the Rift Valley escarpments.
Authorities said updates will be issued as weather conditions evolve.
