The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has temporarily closed the Kaplong–Kisii Road following flooding at the Kipsonoi River Bridge in Mugeni.

In a traffic advisory issued Saturday, the highways authority said rising water levels at the river bridge located between Sotik and Chebilat had overtopped the structure, making the road unsafe for motorists.

According to KeNHA, the flooding was triggered by heavy rainfall in upstream catchment areas, which caused a significant surge in water levels at the river crossing.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority has closed the Kaplong–Kisii Road following flooding at the Kipsonoi River Bridge at Mugeni,” the agency said in the advisory, noting that the rising waters had rendered the bridge impassable.

Motorists using the route have been urged to follow instructions from traffic police and marshals deployed in the area to prevent accidents.

The authority also advised drivers to use alternative routes while the closure remains in place. Motorists heading to Chebilat and Keroka have been directed to use the Kaplong–Sotik–Roret–Ikonge–Chebilat–Keroka route, while those travelling to Kisii should take the Kaplong–Sotik–Roret–Ikonge–Kisii road.

Kenya National Highways Authority Director-General Luka Kimeli said the agency is working to restore normal traffic flow.

“KeNHA assures all road users that it is working around the clock to restore normal traffic flow and ensure the safety of motorists,” Kimeli said.
