The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the indefinite closure of the Migori Footbridge along the Isebania–Sare (A1) Road following rising water levels on River Migori.

In a traffic advisory issued on Sunday, KeNHA said the closure takes effect immediately and is aimed at safeguarding public safety after heavy rains caused significant damage to the structure.

“The section at the Migori Footbridge along the Isebania–Sare (A1) Road will be closed to traffic indefinitely from today, 23rd February 2026,” the Authority said in the notice.

According to KeNHA, swelling waters on River Migori have washed away the gabion protection on the upstream side of the bridge, leaving the footbridge cut off and dangerously hanging.

“This is due to the rising water levels on River Migori resulting from the ongoing heavy rains across the country. The river has washed away the gabion protection at the upstream side of the bridge, leaving the footbridge cut off and dangerously hanging,” the statement read.

Pedestrians who normally use the footbridge have been advised to use the main bridge designated for motorized traffic while the closure remains in force.

“During this period of closure, pedestrians crossing the river are advised to use the main bridge for motorized traffic,” KeNHA said.

The Authority added that it is closely monitoring the situation and will resume reinstatement works once water levels subside and the site is declared safe for construction activities.

“The Authority is closely monitoring the situation, and the reinstatement works shall resume immediately when the water levels subside and the site is safe for work,” the statement added.

KeNHA expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and urged road users to cooperate as mitigation measures are put in place.
