KeNHA Announces Partial Closure of Waiyaki Way for Footbridge Expansion Works

Motorists using Waiyaki Way are set to experience traffic disruptions over the next three months following the announcement of a partial closure of a section of the highway between Karuna Close and Westlands Roundabout. 

In a public notice issued on Thursday, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) said the affected section on the Nakuru-bound carriageway of Waiyaki Way (A8) will be partially closed from Thursday, June 25, 2026, to Friday, September 25, 2026. 

The authority said the closure is necessary to facilitate extension works on the existing pedestrian footbridge at Dunhill Towers and the construction of the proposed Fogo Gaucho–QuickMart Westlands Footbridge, a project aimed at improving pedestrian safety and accessibility along the busy transport corridor. 

Waiyaki Way is one of Nairobi’s most heavily used highways, serving thousands of motorists daily as it links the city centre to Westlands, Kangemi, Kikuyu and other towns along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. 

 The planned works are therefore expected to cause temporary traffic delays, particularly during peak morning and evening hours. 

KeNHA Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli urged motorists to exercise caution while navigating the affected section and to comply with traffic management measures that will be put in place during the construction period. 

“Motorists are further advised to approach the affected section with caution, observe and comply with all temporary traffic signs and traffic control measures as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” Kimeli said. 

According to the authority, traffic marshals and police officers will be deployed to help manage vehicle movement and ensure the safety of both road users and construction workers. 

 Temporary traffic signs and diversions may also be introduced as work progresses. 

The project comes amid growing efforts by road authorities to improve pedestrian infrastructure across Nairobi, where increased urban development and rising traffic volumes have heightened concerns over pedestrian safety on major highways.  

The planned extension of the existing footbridge at Dunhill Towers and the construction of the new crossing near Fogo Gaucho and QuickMart Westlands are expected to provide safer crossing points for pedestrians and reduce the risk of accidents. 

Road users have been advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra travel time and follow guidance issued by traffic officers and construction personnel throughout the duration of the works. 

The partial closure will remain in effect until September 25, 2026, after which normal traffic operations are expected to resume upon completion of the planned infrastructure improvements.
