JSC nominates Justice Mohamed Abdoulaye Wasame For Supreme Court Judge

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has nominated Justice Mohamed Abdoulaye Wasame for appointment to the Supreme Court of Kenya, in a decision now awaiting formal approval by President William Ruto.

Announcing the nomination, Chief Justice Martha Koome said the commission was satisfied that Justice Wasame met the constitutional threshold required for service at the highest court.

“I am therefore pleased to announce that the Judicial Service Commission has nominated the Honorable Mr. Justice Mohamed Abdoulaye Wasame for appointment to the Supreme Court of Kenya,” Koome said.

She added that the nomination has been formally transmitted to the Head of State for appointment in line with constitutional requirements, noting:

“The nomination is being transmitted to His Excellency the President of the Republic for formal appointment in accordance with the provisions of Article 166.1(a) of the Constitution of Kenya.”

The Judicial Service Commission emphasized that Justice Wasame demonstrated the core values expected of a Supreme Court judge, including professional competence, integrity, fairness, sound judgment, and commitment to the rule of law and public service.

“The Judicial Service Commission is fully satisfied that the Honorable Mr. Justice Wasame demonstrated the qualities that the Constitution demands of a judge of the Supreme Court,” Koome said, highlighting his “professional competence, an impeccable integrity, fairness, sound judgment, a genuine and demonstrable commitment to the rule of law and public service.”

She further noted that Justice Wasame’s experience and legal expertise would be valuable to Kenya’s top court, saying his “depth of legal knowledge and breadth of life experience makes him well-suited to contribute meaningfully to the development of Kenya’s jurisprudence at the highest level.”

Koome also acknowledged the other applicants who had been considered for the position, thanking them for participating in the process.

The nomination now moves to the President for final appointment, which would see Justice Wasame join the Supreme Court of Kenya if approved.
