The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has appointed Dr. Eng. Joseph Oketch as its new Director General on an acting basis, following the resignation of former boss Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria.
The appointment, which takes immediate effect, comes a day after Kiptoo stepped down amid an ongoing government probe into alleged irregularities in the petroleum supply chain.
Dr. Oketch brings more than 25 years of experience in the energy sector, having held key leadership roles in both public institutions and the regulatory space.
Prior to his appointment, he served as Director in charge of Electricity and Renewable Energy at EPRA, where he oversaw the formulation, review, and monitoring of regulations, standards, and codes governing the electricity and renewable energy subsectors.
He has also previously worked with Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) and the Rural Electrification Authority (REA), where he held senior management positions.
Dr. Oketch has extensive experience in energy regulation and policy, which positions him well to steer the Authority during this transition period.
Dr. Oketch holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Business Administration in Strategic Management from Kenyatta University, as well as a PhD in Strategic Management from the same institution.
He is a registered professional engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya and a member of both the Institute of Engineers of Kenya and the Kenya Institute of Management.
His appointment comes at a critical time for the regulator, as authorities continue investigations into the fuel supply chain scandal that has already led to high-profile resignations across the energy sector.
Dr. Oketch is expected to provide leadership and stability at EPRA as the institution navigates the ongoing crisis and works to restore public confidence.
