The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into a shooting incident in Embu County that left two people dead and several others injured during protests over healthcare services.
In a statement, IPOA said the incident occurred on April 14 in Mbeere North Sub-county after residents staged demonstrations over the status and service delivery at Ishiara Level 4 Hospital.
According to the authority, police officers responding to the unrest allegedly opened fire while attempting to restore order, resulting in two fatalities from gunshot wounds and multiple injuries.
IPOA confirmed that a Rapid Response Team has been dispatched to the area to gather evidence and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Authority is mandated to investigate deaths and injuries resulting from police action,” the statement said, adding that appropriate recommendations, including possible prosecution, will be made if wrongdoing is established.
The watchdog also extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a quick recovery to the injured.
At the same time, IPOA urged residents to remain calm and allow investigations to proceed.
The incident adds to growing scrutiny over the use of force by police during public demonstrations, with the authority reiterating its commitment to conducting independent, impartial and transparent investigations.
