Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered investigations and immediate security changes following a security breach during President William Ruto’s event in Ganze, Kilifi County.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Kanja described the incident that occurred during a Thanksgiving event attended by President Ruto as a serious matter of national concern, saying any lapse involving the Head of State’s security was unacceptable.
“The National Police Service wishes to address a serious security breach that occurred today, 24 May 2026, during a thanksgiving event in Ganze, Kilifi County, where His Excellency Dr William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, was addressing members of the public,” Kanja said.
According to the Inspector General, security agencies moved swiftly to contain the situation and restore order, but maintained that any compromise on presidential security would be treated with utmost seriousness.
Kanja announced that a special investigations team had been constituted to conduct what he termed a swift, thorough and uncompromising inquiry into the incident and establish how the breach occurred.
“As Inspector General of the National Police Service, I have immediately constituted a special investigations team to conduct a swift, thorough and uncompromising inquiry into how this breach occurred,” he said.
The police boss also announced immediate changes to officers responsible for presidential security, saying the move was aimed at strengthening existing protocols and preventing a recurrence.
“I have also ordered immediate changes to the security detail responsible for the President’s protection in order to strengthen protocols and rectify any existing vulnerabilities,” Kanja said.
The Inspector General further cautioned members of the public attending events involving the President and other national leaders to strictly comply with security procedures.
“Any attempt to breach security will be met with the full force of the law,” he warned.
The National Police Service said it remains committed to protecting the country and ensuring the highest standards of security are maintained for the President and other national leaders.
The police statement, however, did not disclose the exact nature of the security breach at the Kilifi event.
