Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has alleged that his driver was shot in the chest by police officers during confrontations that disrupted the planned Linda Mwananchi rally in Nyahururu.
Kang’ata said his team was attacked by goons while at the AIPCA church grounds before the rally, claiming they were met with violence despite attending the event peacefully.
“My driver Gitari has been shot during the Linda Mwananchi Rally. Today, we were first stoned by goons while we were at the AIPCA church, and my driver was injured after being shot in the chest by the police,” Kang’ata said.
The governor accused security officers of using excessive force against his team, saying they had arrived in Nyahururu peacefully to participate in the rally.
“It is so unfortunate. We came in peace, but what we got in return was being stoned,” he said.
The Linda Mwananchi rally was organised as part of a political mobilisation campaign, but the event faced disruptions amid heightened security concerns and clashes involving opposing groups.
Kang’ata’s allegations come as political leaders continue to raise concerns over the handling of public rallies and the conduct of security agencies during political activities.
Police authorities had not immediately issued a response to the governor’s claims at the time of reporting.
