Four suspects arrested earlier in possession of a homemade firearm and other crude weapons have been positively identified in connection with a violent carjacking and gang rape incident in Kisii, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations has said.
According to the DCI, the attack began along Mocheche Avenue where a young couple was seated inside a vehicle before they were ambushed by six armed men.
The gang reportedly forced their way into the car and commandeered it before driving the victims to a thicket in Bobaracho.
Police said the attackers robbed the couple of valuables and Sh34,000 in cash before blindfolding them and locking them inside the vehicle’s boot.
The suspects later drove around for hours before abandoning the male victim in Mabundu area in Nyamira County while fleeing with his girlfriend.
Detectives say the woman was later sexually assaulted by the gang before being abandoned in an undisclosed location.
The four suspects — identified as Peter Kuria, Moses Kariuki, Robert Omosa and Evans Makori — were positively identified by the victim during an identification parade conducted at Kisii Police Station.
“The quartet are undergoing processing pending arraignment,” the DCI said in a statement.
Detectives added that efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest two other suspects believed to have participated in the attack.
The agency urged members of the public with information that could aid investigations to report anonymously through its toll-free hotline or WhatsApp platform.
