More than a decade after a violent night on Kenyatta Avenue that shocked the nation, families of the victims in the killing of former Kabete MP George Muchai are a step closer to justice.
On that February night in 2015, Muchai, his two bodyguards and driver were gunned down in a brazen attack in the heart of Nairobi.
The incident left the country stunned and raised fears about rising violent crime in the capital.
Nearly nine years later, a trial court at the Milimani Law Courts has found four men guilty of robbery with violence linked to the attack and a series of related robberies that occurred that night.
Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina convicted Eric Munyera Isabwa alias Chairman, Raphael Kimani Gachii alias Kim Butcher, Mustafa Kimani Anyoni alias Musto, and Stephen Astiva Lipopo alias Chokore after ruling that prosecutors had proved their involvement beyond reasonable doubt.
Court proceedings revealed that the gang not only carried out the deadly attack but also robbed members of the public during the chaotic night as they moved through the city armed with guns.
In his ruling, Onyina said the evidence showed a clear pattern in how the gang operated, including similarities in the number of attackers involved, the weapons used and the coordination of the assaults.
The four men were also convicted of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, offences under the Firearms Act.
However, the court acquitted a fifth suspect, Simon Gichamba, citing insufficient evidence to connect him to the crimes.
The verdict brings renewed attention to a case that has lingered in the courts for years while families of the victims waited for accountability.
The four convicts are expected back in court on March 18, 2026, when the court will deliver their sentences.
For relatives of those killed that night, the ruling signals that even after years of investigations and court proceedings, justice for the victims has not been forgotten.
