Fire Breaks Out at Gacarage Secondary School in Murang’a

A fire broke out at Gacarage Secondary School in Kandara Ruchu, Murang’a County, prompting an emergency response from county fire and rescue teams.

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata said firefighters had been deployed to the school and were working alongside local community responders to contain the blaze.

“Murang’a County Fire and Rescue teams are on site and actively battling the fire alongside local community responders,” the governor said in a statement on Sunday evening.

The county government said the safety of students, teachers and nearby residents remained the top priority as emergency operations continued at the school.

According to Kang’ata, evacuation procedures were immediately activated following the incident, with all students successfully accounted for.

“The safety of students, staff, and nearby residents is our immediate priority. Evacuation protocols have been activated and all learners have been accounted for,” he said.

Authorities said the cause of the fire had not yet been established, adding that a full assessment would be conducted once the situation was brought under control.

“The cause of the fire is not yet confirmed. Our team will conduct a full assessment once the situation is under control,” the governor added.

Residents were urged to stay away from the school to allow emergency teams easy access to the scene as firefighting efforts continued.

The county government also appealed to the public to avoid spreading unverified information and instead rely on official county communication channels for updates.

“We understand this is worrying, especially for parents and the school community. Our teams are working to contain the fire and minimize damage,” Kang’ata said.

No injuries or fatalities had been reported by Thursday evening.
