Motorists will pay significantly more for fuel over the next month after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced a sharp increase in petroleum prices effective April 15, 2026.
In its latest monthly review issued under the Petroleum Act, EPRA said the price of Super Petrol has risen by KSh28.69 per litre, while Diesel has increased by KSh40.30 per litre. The price of Kerosene remains unchanged.
In Nairobi, Super Petrol will now retail at KSh206.97 per litre, Diesel at KSh206.84, and Kerosene at KSh152.78 for the next 30 days.
EPRA attributed the increases to rising international oil prices, which have driven up the landed cost of petroleum products.
Despite the spike, the government has introduced measures aimed at cushioning consumers.
The Value Added Tax (VAT) on fuel has been reduced from 16 percent to 13 percent, a move officials say is intended to ease the burden on households and businesses.
In addition, the government will tap into the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) Fund to stabilize pump prices, with approximately KSh6.2 billion set aside for the intervention.
“The adjustment in VAT and use of the PDL Fund are meant to cushion consumers from the high landed cost of petroleum products,” EPRA said.
The prices, which take effect at midnight, are inclusive of VAT and reflect adjustments under various tax and finance laws, including recent amendments and inflation-based excise duty revisions.
The latest increase is expected to have a ripple effect across the economy, pushing up transport and production costs at a time when consumers are already grappling with a high cost of living.
