Eliud Owalo has resigned from his position as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency, hours after announcing his intention to run for President of the Republic of Kenya in the 2027 General Election.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Sunday, Owalo said his continued stay in government was no longer tenable following his declaration to seek the presidency.
He announced that his resignation takes effect immediately.
“Following my declaration earlier today that I intend to run for Presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the year 2027, my position as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Delivery and Government Efficiency is no longer tenable,” Owalo said in the statement.
“I have therefore resigned from the position with immediate effect.”
Owalo’s resignation marks the first major political consequence of his presidential announcement and places him among early entrants positioning themselves for the 2027 race.
Until his resignation, he served in a key role within the Executive, overseeing government delivery and efficiency under the Office of the President.
His exit is likely to trigger discussions within government on succession arrangements for the role, while also setting the stage for his transition into active national politics ahead of the next general election.
There was no immediate comment from State House on Owalo’s resignation by Sunday evening.
Owalo has previously held senior positions in both government and the private sector and has been a vocal figure in national policy debates.
His declaration adds to the growing list of political leaders signalling early ambitions for the country’s top office, as Kenya gradually enters the pre-2027 political season.
