The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Kenya Power and Lighting Company employee over allegations of extorting Sh300,000 from a customer in exchange for reconnecting electricity at Runda Mumwe Estate.
In a statement issued Friday, EACC identified the suspect as Bernard Githinji Maina, a meter reader attached to the Runda sector
“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Friday arrested a Kenya Power and Lighting Company employee over allegations of extorting Kes300,000 from a customer in exchange for reconnecting electricity at Runda Mumwe Estate,” the Commission said.
According to the anti-graft agency, the suspect allegedly demanded the money on January 24, 2026, to facilitate reconnection of power supply. It is further alleged that he threatened to have the customer billed Kes2 million if the bribe was not paid.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had disconnected electricity to the estate on October 25, 2025, citing an alleged illegal connection, despite the complainant having no outstanding electricity bill arrears.

“Investigations revealed that the suspect had disconnected power to the estate on October 25, 2025, citing an alleged illegal connection. The complainant had no outstanding electricity bill arrears,” EACC stated.
Upon receiving the complaint on February 27, 2026, the Commission conducted preliminary investigations before mounting an operation that led to the suspect’s arrest as he allegedly received Kes180,000 from the complainant at Runda Mumwe Estate.
He was escorted to Integrity Centre for processing and later booked at Kilimani Police Station, where he spent the night. He was released Saturday morning on a cash bail of Kes50,000 pending completion of investigations.
“The Commission reiterates its commitment to tackling bribery at service delivery points and enhancing the quality of public services for all citizens,” EACC said.
The arrest forms part of the Commission’s ongoing crackdown on corruption at key public service delivery points across the country.
