EACC Arrests Former Auditor General’s Office Employee Over Alleged Fake KCSE Certificate

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a former employee of the Office of the Auditor General in an ongoing crackdown targeting the use of forged academic certificates in public service employment.

In a statement issued on Thursday, May 21, 2026, the anti-graft agency said Mercy Akinyi Ofuwa was arrested over allegations that she used a forged Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate to secure employment at the Office of the Auditor General (OAG).

According to EACC, investigations established that Ofuwa allegedly forged KCSE academic documents purportedly originating from Umina Secondary School and used them during her job application process at the Auditor General’s office.

The Commission said it completed investigations and forwarded the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which approved multiple charges against the suspect.

She is expected to face charges of forgery, uttering a false document, and fraudulent acquisition of public property amounting to KSh5.8 million, which investigators say represents salaries allegedly earned during her period of employment at the OAG.

“The Director of Public Prosecutions approved charges of forgery, uttering a false document, and fraudulent acquisition of public property amounting to Kes5,838,790,” EACC said.

The suspect was released on a cash bail of KSh50,000 and is expected to be arraigned in court.

Beyond the criminal proceedings, EACC said it will institute civil recovery measures aimed at reclaiming salaries and benefits allegedly obtained using fraudulent academic qualifications.

The arrest forms part of a broader anti-corruption campaign by the Commission targeting individuals accused of using forged academic and professional documents to gain entry into public institutions.

The anti-graft body has in recent years intensified investigations into certificate fraud, warning that falsification of academic credentials undermines integrity, merit-based recruitment and public trust in government institutions.
