The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested five traffic police officers stationed at Busia Police Station for allegedly extorting bribes from motorists along the Kisumu–Busia highway.

The officers were arrested at a roadblock located about five kilometres from Busia Town following a sting operation prompted by several complaints from motorists and members of the public.

The EACC said the officers had been demanding money from drivers entering or leaving the border town without conducting any lawful traffic checks.

The officers arrested are Corporal Hezron Aburi, Corporal Mary Nabei, Police Constable James Weru, Police Constable Mwakwekwe Nyoka, and Police Constable Aisha Abdullahi.

They were taken to the EACC Western Regional Office in Bungoma for questioning before being booked at Bungoma Police Station for further processing.

The Commission stated that the interception is part of a wider campaign to eradicate bribery across public service delivery points.

In a statement, the EACC noted:

“The Commission is scaling up intelligence gathering and surveillance targeting essential public services and sectors prone to bribery, to improve access to quality services for all citizens.”

The crackdown comes amid continued public outcry over alleged corruption among traffic officers on Kenyan roads, where motorists often report cases of extortion under the guise of road safety enforcement.
