Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale is facing sharp criticism from a section of Kenyans following his condolence message on the death of veteran gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka.

In a statement shared on social media, Duale expressed sorrow over the passing of the 83-year-old, describing him as a dedicated medical professional who made significant contributions to maternal and reproductive healthcare in Kenya.

“Dr. Obwaka devoted his life to advancing medical practice in Kenya, leaving an invaluable contribution to the medical fraternity through his clinical excellence, leadership and mentorship of generations of practitioners,” Duale said.

He added that the government honours Obwaka’s service and extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the wider medical community.

However, the message triggered an immediate backlash online, with critics accusing the government of hypocrisy and linking Obwaka’s death to recent events surrounding his arrest.

Several social media users questioned the sincerity of the tribute, alleging that the doctor’s suffering stemmed from a dispute involving Nairobi Hospital leadership wrangles.

“Crocodile tears. This old man’s life was cut short by greed and corruption. He suffered so much in jail,” wrote one user, Simon Maina.

Another, Boj Amoj, claimed:

“Dr Job Obwaka refused, was arrested and detained… Weeks later the 83-year-old collapses in court and dies. Coincidence?”

Others accused the government of mistreating the elderly doctor during his arrest and detention, describing the condolence message as “mockery” and “insensitive.”

The criticism stems from a recent dispute at Nairobi Hospital that escalated into arrests of board members, including Dr Obwaka. The wrangles reportedly centered on control and governance of the facility, with claims circulating that individuals linked to President William Ruto had interests in the hospital’s leadership. However, no official findings have publicly confirmed these allegations.

Dr Obwaka was arrested and detained for several days before being presented in court, where he reportedly fell ill and was rushed to hospital. His death weeks later has intensified public debate, with some Kenyans attributing his deteriorating health to the ordeal—claims that remain unverified.

The government has not formally responded to the accusations circulating online.

The incident has reignited concerns over governance disputes in private health institutions and the treatment of senior professionals caught in high-stakes power struggles.

As tributes continue to pour in, the controversy surrounding Dr Obwaka’s final days underscores growing public scrutiny of state actions and accountability.
