The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over investigations into the discovery of a suspected mass grave at Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho East Sub-County, Kericho County, intensifying scrutiny over the burial of unclaimed bodies transferred from another county.
In a statement, the agency said its Homicide Directorate is now leading a specialised team to establish the circumstances surrounding the burials, including whether any criminal activity may have occurred.
“A formal application for exhumation will be filed on March 23, 2026, to allow pathologists and forensic experts to recover the remains, establish the cause and manner of death, and attempt identification of the deceased,” the DCI said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that 13 unclaimed bodies were released from Nyamira County Referral Hospital and transported to Kericho for burial on the morning of March 20.
However, discrepancies in burial records have raised concerns, prompting deeper inquiries.
Detectives have since travelled to Nyamira County, where they are interviewing individuals involved in the process, including public health officers, drivers, escorts, and the cemetery caretaker.
At least five witnesses have already recorded statements, with more expected.
During a search of the caretaker’s residence, investigators recovered a photocopied court order allegedly issued by Nyamira Law Courts authorising the burial of seven unclaimed bodies—fewer than the 13 reported. Authorities say the original document and related paperwork will undergo verification.
Meanwhile, a white Land Cruiser believed to have transported the bodies has been impounded and is undergoing forensic examination.
The cemetery, owned by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), remains sealed off under round-the-clock police guard.
The DCI emphasised its commitment to a thorough and transparent probe, noting that “all aspects of the matter—including the discrepancy in burial numbers, the authenticity of documentation, the condition of the remains, and any indication of foul play—will be thoroughly examined.”
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and report any relevant information to the nearest police station or through official hotlines, as investigations continue.
