The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has provided a detailed progress report on the ongoing inquiry into the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, who died earlier this month in a tragic road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.
According to the statement released on Thursday, detectives have been pursuing leads to establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
A team of investigators travelled to Keringet in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, to trace and interview individuals linked to a white Toyota Probox, registration number KDJ 564E, which was captured on CCTV at Eagol Petrol Station near Karai shortly before the accident occurred.
The vehicle was confirmed to be registered to Hon. William Mutai, the Member of County Assembly for Keringet Ward and Majority Leader of the Nakuru County Assembly.
Investigators established that the car is managed by Mutai’s wife, who allegedly hired it out on December 11, 2025, to Denis Kipyegon Koech.
Koech intended to use the vehicle to transport family members to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to receive their son returning from New Mexico University in the United States.
Statements recorded from Koech and his family revealed that they departed Keringet for Nairobi on December 12, arriving at JKIA at 5:00 p.m.
Their son’s flight landed later that night at around 10:00 p.m., and after completing clearance formalities, the family began their return journey shortly after midnight.
While driving back, the family stopped at Eagol Petrol Station near Karai to refill their wiper fluid due to poor visibility.
During this brief stop, they reportedly saw Jirongo exiting the station and heading toward Nairobi.
Moments later, they heard a loud bang and witnessed a bus dragging Jirongo’s vehicle along the road.
The family said they briefly stopped near the accident scene at the request of a petrol station guard, who sought their assistance in rescuing the victim.
They did not alight from their vehicle but instead used their headlights to illuminate the wreckage, as it was dark and no other vehicles had yet arrived.
Once other motorists began to arrive and traffic built up, they left the scene and continued their journey, arriving home at around 6:00 a.m. It was only later that they learned the victim of the crash was Hon. Jirongo.
The DCI noted that it is interrogating the veracity of these claims and emphasized that investigations remain ongoing.
The agency reassured Jirongo’s family, friends, and the public that detectives are committed to conducting thorough and impartial inquiries to establish the truth behind the incident.
Jirongo, a veteran politician and former presidential candidate, was a prominent figure in Kenya’s political landscape.
His sudden death has sparked widespread grief and calls for clarity on the circumstances of the accident.
The DCI’s latest update underscores the complexity of the investigation and the determination of authorities to provide answers to the nation.
