DCI detectives in western Kenya have arrested four suspects in connection with a violent robbery and sexual assault reported in Butere earlier this year.
According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the arrests followed a targeted operation by officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and the Operation Action Team (OAT), who acted on intelligence to track down those linked to the January 28 incident.
Police said three suspects allegedly broke into a local shop at night, where they attacked the shopkeeper and committed serious crimes before fleeing with goods valued at about Sh200,000 and an undisclosed amount of cash.
“Their efforts led them to Mabungo village, where two suspects were cornered and arrested,” the DCI said in the statement, adding that further interrogation helped officers trace a third suspect to Shirota village.
The suspects were identified as Benard Yaya Anaswa, Kelvin Omutanyi Zablon, and Peter Osumba Omusinde.
Investigators later extended the operation to Sabatia Market, where a fourth suspect, Johnstone Songa Maube, was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen property. Authorities reported recovering several mobile phones believed to be part of the stolen items.
All four suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, with police preparing to arraign them in court. Recovered items are being held as exhibits.
The DCI has urged members of the public to continue sharing information that could assist in ongoing investigations.
