DCI Arrests Ex-Convict in Cyber Fraud Crackdown, Recovers 39 SIM Cards

DCI detectives have arrested a suspected cyber fraudster in Igembe North, marking what authorities describe as a major breakthrough in the fight against digital crime.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect, identified as Morris Kithinji Tirimiti, was apprehended during a coordinated evening operation in the Irindii area of Laare.

The operation, carried out jointly by DCI officers and Kenya Police Service (KPS) personnel under the supervision of local commanders, followed what officials termed as credible intelligence linking the suspect to suspicious digital activities in the area.

Upon arrest, detectives conducted a search and recovered six mobile phones believed to have been used in fraudulent operations.

Officers also seized 39 SIM cards—33 registered under Safaricom PLC and six under Airtel Kenya—raising concerns over the scale of the alleged scheme.

Authorities say preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect has a criminal history, having previously served a 12-year prison sentence at Kamiti and Naivasha prisons for a conviction related to grievous harm.

“The arrest marks a significant step in dismantling suspected fraud networks operating within the region,” the DCI said, warning the public to remain vigilant against emerging cyber scams.

Investigators have since taken over the case and are pursuing further leads to identify possible accomplices, trace victims, and determine the full extent of the suspect’s activities.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to tackling cybercrime and urged members of the public to report suspicious activities through official channels.
